If its not in the system good luck. I have requested online and via email for a course to be added for over a month. I tried to map it myself but you have to stand for 10 seconds on the front, middle and back of the green plus anything else you want mapped. Its impossible during an actual game. I highly recommend to check the list first. If its not listed you might never get it added. My cousin bought another GPS system and requested the same course and it was available for download in less than a week.

The scoring system is a bit strange. I have yet to find it accurate in my GIR's and Fairways hit for some reason. I am not sure if that is operator error or something else.

The worst news is I used it 5 times in a little over a month and it was stolen from my cart during a bathroom break. Do not leave it out around a clubhouse.

Set up and registration of thr product was easy, from there on there are some problems. The mapping function does not work as explained in the manual. While I was able to figure out a way to map a course it is slightly more time consuming than the manual would have you believe. It was very difficult to get a response from tech service

and thier follow-up has been spotty at best.

In summary, the gps seems to work well enough and the accuracy appears good. Service has a long way to go and will eventually damage the product.

I originally bought the Sureshot over the equivalent Skycaddie model because the yearly fee's were much more reasonable. My unit has lasted more than two years and the battery shows no signs of performance loss. I usually go two or three rounds without a recharge. The unit is very accurate, and courses are easily user mapped if they haven't been professionally mapped by Sureshot. This is the only golf gadget I've purchased that hasn't been a waste of money. I still use my Sureshot for every round I play.

I bought this unit because I am a Mac user and when shopping for a GPS this was the only one that touted itself as "Mac compatable." After trying to download the proper software I discovered it wouldn't work because I don't have a Intel-based Mac that will run Parallels Desktop. "...Parallels Desktop allows a user to run a Virtual machine (Guest OS) inside a windowed environment but is only supported under Windows XP..." This is COMPATABLE? Let's talk about available courses. I live in Oregon and SureShot lists a total of 78 courses in Oregon available for download. SkyCaddie lists about 175 Oregon courses and GolfLogix has well over 200. If I could do it all over again, I would buy one of these units which are roughly the same price.

"Pathetic battery life" 2010-02-17

I have owned this for abt a year. Initially charged batteries every two weeks, for use in a camera. Within 2 months the batteries began to weaken, lasting just 20 mins or so in the camera, just shooting stills, no video, no watching pictures. Then one battery was completely dead, leaving behind three that worked poorly. Now only two remain, holding charge for 20-25 mins at most.

I rarely use it now, having no faith in how long the batteries will last. I know that every battery has a fixed life, but did not expect that life to be less than 50 hours.

I have read the manual and used the refresh option (discharge and then recharge) to no avail. I bought this from amazon and so no chance of a fake. Am surprised that Sony is not that reliable, expected better of them.

I've used ours for a few years and it works well. It does take a few hours to charge up to 4 batteries. My daughter has one of those 15 minute chargers and it costs twice as much so its really up to your preference as to how fast do you need those batteries charged.

I just bought a second charger by another maker and I was shocked to discover it takes 11 to 15 hours to charge 4 batteries. I don't mine 3 or 4 but 11 to 15 kind of makes it difficult to travel with.

I would suggest if the package does not say how long it takes to charge, more than likely its a long time and they don't want you to know that. I would avoid it.

The Sony travels nicely and plugs into 110.

I purchased my Skycaddie last year and at first, I loved it but as time went on, I noticed some key issues with the unit and with the company. I'm hoping my review will help you decide on your next GPS Golf Rangerfinder.

PROS

* accurate

* uses AA batteries (no worries of running out of battery life)

CONS

* takes over 5 mins to lock on to a satellite

* too many times the screen goes blank if the satellite signal is weak so to fix it, you have to restart or reset the unit. What a pain.

* Yearly membership fees just to download courses (adds to the total cost of the unit). Why should anyone pay when there are units out there that are just as good and don't charge you a fee?

* Not able to keep track of your score, fairways hit, putts, girs, time

CONCLUSION

I will continue to use it until my membership expires then I'll put up for auction. I'm looking to replace it for the Golf Guru which I played with last week. The unit cost less, offers more, no yearly membership fees, and the distances matched exactly the same as my Skycaddie. Right then, I knew Skycaddie was no longer #1 rangefinder in golf. There are many other choices out there, just do your homework.

Purchased my Sky Caddie in Jan 08. My initial impressions were favorable, but I soon discovered a number of shortcomings.

1. If I had anything short of a full charge, my Sky Caddie was unable to get a satellite lock, rendering it useless for the round.

2. Distances were often inaccurate - often by as much as 15 yards. My observations were based upon known shot lengths at my home club. This caused some issues at clubs where I was not as familiar with the golf course.

3. Customer service - I left 3 messages for customer service reps (no one picked up the phone) and not one was returned.

4. When I asked my club pro about his experience, he indicated that he already had 7 Sky Caddie's turned in by members that did not function properly. His rep indicated that nothing would be done to repair or replace the units.

When the unit worked properly, it was wonderful, especially on a course that was not well known. However, the shortcomings and lack of support are a deal breaker.

Been using it for a year and I love this unit. Sure its not a pretty color unit but it gives me all the information I need and the maps are free and Sonocaddie will map a course for you pretty quick. if you don't want to wait you can easily map a course yourself and even submit it to sonocaddie for others to download. Great unit and well worth the money!

This is without a question the worst golf GPS in the market. You can tell it is very cheaply made, I imagine slightest water or accidental drop can damage this unit very easily. Downloading a course information is a royal pain, and the instructions are not very clear, they do however attache an additional instructions for downloading. After downloading you've better go back and set your computer to its original settings, otherwise expect the surprises from your computer. Their customer service personnel are pleasant but not very helpful. Another bad experience! I wanted to make sure my course data was in their system, so I sent them all the info, and the score card. After waiting 2 months the course data was installed in their system. Finally I purchased the unit and guess what?????? Only 12 hole data was accurate the rest were GROSSLY wrong.I mean 100 - 200 yrds variations. So I called them to correct this data. They again ask me to send them more course information and the score card again. I am tired of dealing with a second class company and it is time for me to return the GPS back to them. The only reason I bought this unit because of no yearly membership fee, and I learned my lesson " You get what you pay for it".

I've used the Sonocaddie XV2 for two seasons now both here (New Jersey) and in Myrtle Beach. I had the first generation Skycaddie and returned it after a month because it was unreliable (frequently did not pick up satelites). The SV2 has been great. It always picks up at least 6 satellites and is highly accurate with distances. I rarely have had an experience where I could not find a course in their online database and when I could not, the courses I requested were added quickly. Downloading of courses is a snap and can be done from any PC, which makes traveling easy if you have access to teh Internet.

The unit has never so much as hicupped, though sometimes with a lower amount of satellites it can take a few seconds to 'lock in' your distances. Very light, easy to use and handy with the included belt clip. The unit is powered by regular aaa batteries, which I feel is better than the GPS units you have to charge 'cause you can always carry spare batteries but a 110 volt outlet is rare on a golf course. I get at least a half dozen rounds out of a set of aaa batts. Free course downloads as well (no subscriptions).

The only downside is that the unit can be difficult to read in dim very conditions, though the contrast is adjustable. That said I highly recommend the Sonocaddie SV2.

The product works fine, the problem is the courses I play are not available in their data base. Of the courses I regularly play, none of the 5 courses in northwest Iowa or the 4 courses I play in the southern Rio Grande Valley are available. I would recommend checking the data base prior to ordering.

You can request a course, but don't expect much for a reponse.

Fortunately, entering course data manually is not difficult.

Prior to replacing my old model SkyCaddie, I did a great deal of research on newer GPS units. On paper, the Sonocaddie XV2 came out on top, based on the type of information I was looking for from a golf GPS and the price. After receiving it, I spent an entire day attempting to download courses, without any success. On five occasions, I attempted to contact technical support, and received no responses -- online or via phone. I am not a computer novice, having been CEO of a software company for nearly 20 years, but I found this totally confounding and unacceptable. I returned the Sonocaddie after several more hours of trying to make it work and have since replaced it with the second choice from my research --a GolfLogix GPS. I'm very happy with the latter.

This thing really grabs the windshield and holds on. I'm disappointed in the "flex" arm. It is not a flex in the true sense, it is a piece of aluminum rod in a flex-like plastic covering. It is bendable but not easily. I'm concerned that if you have to bend it frequently to put it in different locations on a cart (e.g. driver vs passenger side)it may eventually break. Otherwise it works great.

"Golf Guru 4 vs OnPar GPS units with OnPar the Winner!" 2010-02-03

I think it is a given that most golf GPS units provide reasonably accurate distances from a given point on a golf course to the front/middle/back of a green. The better units allow you to position the pin on the green to match its position on a given round, providing distance to the pin, not just the front/middle/back of a green. The best available units also provide 1) graphical hole depictions that show bunkers, hazards, etc. and the related distances to them, and 2) provide a method for tracking shot distances so you can determine how far you hit various clubs during actual playing conditions.

After spending weeks researching the myriad golf GPS units on the market, I followed the usually reliable Amazon user recommendations and purchased a Golf Guru 4. Boy was I disappointed! First it does not come with the desired graphical hole depictions. Rather they have to be purchased for approximately $8 per course. Second, even after you purchase one of their AerVu maps you find that their usefulness is restricted by the small screen size. Another serious flaw is that the shot tracking feature is minimalist at best. It is awkward to use, and worst of all, it does not provide a way to track or upload the data. Rather you have to record the information by hand after each round. UGH! Finally after using the unit for a dozen rounds I found that it repeatedly experienced freeze-ups (3 or 4 times per round). Needless to say I returned the unit.

I then purchased an OnPar unit. It turns out to be a much better unit in all regards.

It provides absolutely free, great graphical depictions for over 10,000 courses (with 1000 more being added each month). Furthermore, although the screen sizes are comparable, the OnPar unit provides the ability to easily "zoom-in" on each hole to get very accurate distances to any point on a hazard, bunker, etc.. The OnPar unit also has an easy to use feature for tracking shot distances. It then tracks the last 18 rounds worth of data and can even, if you want, based upon this data suggest the club to use for each shot. Finally, the OnPar unit provides a simple feature that allows you to create your own distance marks on any given hole. These marks can be used to identify locations like the end of a flat area on a fairway, or the carry distance for a water hazard, etc.. To be fair the Golf Guru 4 has a similar feature.

I found that both units are readable in full sunlight, although it helps to move them into the shade to read them. Each unit holds a charge that lasts several rounds. Each unit provides separate views of the green for each hole, and the ability to drag the pin around to its actual location on a given round in order to provide the distance to the pin, not just the front/middle/back of the green.

In summary, the OnPar golf GPS unit is as good or better than a Golf Guru 4 in every regard. It provides great graphical depictions for free. It has an easy-to-use zoom feature that allows the user to get very accurate distances to every point on each hole. Finally the OnPar unit has a nifty feature for tracking the distance of your shots.

The clear winner of this comparison is the OnPar.

Got the item about a month ago. I like the "Mark" feature that let's you know how far you hit the ball. Also, as most reviews will probably point out, the customer service people are very good. I have trouble reading the screen in the sunlight at times and my battery power lasts for just 2 rounds (not the 14 hours promised). Overall, I am pleased with how the unit has performed. Any time I have had a chance to confirm it's accuracy it gets high marks. Worth the price.

I was very excited to buy this after much research on line. I wasn't sure about using it with a MAC because I had read somewhere that they didn't work with Apple programing. A phone call to the manufacturer was never returned, but finally on their website I found MAC downloads, so I bought this. (MY fault for not waiting, yes, but it was to be a birthday gift and I was running out of time if I was going to buy on-line) It came very fast and well packaged, so I am very please with the vendor, just not the manufacturer. The company, however did e-mail me back (of course..AFTER I bought one!!) and unfortunately and unbelievably ...... it does not work with MACS. No body needs a$350 piece of useless plastic!!!

Got the Golf Guru for Fathers day and what a gift! So easy to use and almost always dead accurate. Had one course that one hole was off for some reason but the rest of the course was perfect. Have never made so many birdies in my life and my misses are still close because I'm playing to the flag instead of the green. I have yet for the battery even to go down a little bit and it always locks on to satellites right away. Have played rounds with people with Skycaddies that would only work every couple holes when there are clouds where mine never has a problem. Love it!

I compared all golf gps units based on price and features and benefits and the Sonocaddie was my choice. I am so happy with this purchase. I have only played one round, but it was great. I am a 9 handicap and was able to focus on my game and not waste a bunch of time looking for sprinkler heads that were not very evident. I am anxious to play a course with gps on the cart so I can compare but the distances that I hit were very consistent. Once I stood on a 200 yard marker and the sonocaddie said "202". That's very good. Though I play in a metropolitan area, most of the time I had 9-10 satellites showing on the unit and only 6 are needed for accurate measure. I love the scorecard feature, although I forgot to change it to pro prior to my round. I was able to change it after the round and was able to go back and add putts and fairways hit. I played better because I focused on my game instead of the guy I was playing (we tied at 83). I love the sonocaddie. There is only a one-time fee to load all US courses of $30 and there is a $50 free gift pack when you order before the end of January. Get on it man! Amazon has the best price.

Owned product for one full golf season. Never had one issue with the unit. Averaged 8-12 satellites.

Pros. I custome picked my own points on the courses I played. I picked/chg all layup spots, bunkers, hazards, also the front, middle and back pins (default the yardages were off 10 - 20 yds). Neat color screen with backlight. If the course is not on the list to download, they will make it within a week. AND NO YEARLY FEES!!! With no fees unit will pay for itself in approx four/five years!

Cons. The buttons color is wearing off, also again the first time i used it yardages were not correct-likely cause of how they map.

Summary great if you take the time to custome mark your course, bad if you plan on playing course only once.

The Sonocaddie V300 has a lot of very nice features as well as a good warranty and no annual cost for a course downloading membership. Locks on quickly. Love the capability of adding (or correcting) checkpoints on the mapped courses. Only negative is that the device does not advance automatically to the next hole as you move around the course. Like this unit much better than my previous golf gps, which failed during the first 6 months of ownership.

I've own the Sonocaddie now for 9 months and am a happy owner of this GPS device. It comes with everything you need to manage it except for a golf course. You can use it to measure the distance from your house to the stop sign at the end of your street without a golf course if you want. This unit however takes a little bit to get use to. Its such a pretty unit and so well built that you don't mind putting in the time to figure it out. You will like all of the features of this unit and it would help if Sonocaddie were to simulate its use on the golf course in the instruction booklet so that it could show off what it can do and give you an idea of how to manage this device with your round of golf.

First off, its battery life is excellent. The battery can last at least 3 full rounds of golf.

2nd, the screen is bright and easy to see even in the sunlight

3rd, membership for the V300 is $30 and that's it. you have access to every golf course in the world, posting your score and mapping requests and any updates.

4th, scorecard feature keeps track of your stats, greens in regulation etc.

5th, has the ability to measure your distance on the golf course or anywhere

6th, accuracy of distance is on par with all other GPS devices plus or minus 5 yards

7th, comes with very, very, very convenient belt clip

8th, at this point in time the support is excellent the best that there is among all of the GPS devices

9th, logging on to their site and updating, posting your scores or requesting a course to be mapped is very easy to do

10th,you can tell by the way its built that Snocaddie engineers were concerned about its ability to withstand wet conditions as well as being able to see the screen in bright sunlight.

11th, it fits in my hand perfectly and it will fit in yours nicely also

12th, it looks great, classy and stylish with a beautiful screen and fully featured

13th, it has given me confidence and am more relaxed on shots that I didn't think I had because its my caddie

14th, my golf partners are always asking me for their distances and they make really good shots too! Not thrilled with that, they ought to get their own caddie.

Quirks and things you have to get use to

1st, the buttons are harder to press, something I got use to quickly

2nd, managing its use on the golf course took some getting use to e.g. You turn it on, that can take 30 seconds to 5 minutes for it to access the satellites to get started. Then selection of the golf course. Stand on the tee and snocaddies' screen gives you the distances and a look of the layout of the fairway, press right upper button to mark your position and hit your ball. Hit the mark button again when you get to your ball to find out how far you hit your ball and mark start again for next shot. The Snocaddie will show the icon of an orange person positioned somewhere on your first hole along with the distance for your next shot to the green with layout of hazards and the green. Pressing the lower left button gives you an overall view of the green and distances to front middle and back. Hit your ball and mark again when you get to your ball. After you make your putt, press upper left button for scoring. Press right button and enter score, putts, sand y or n, fairway y or n. Right button to move to the next hole for scoring. Press left lower button to move to 2nd hole and fairway view with sand traps and hazards with appropriate distances. And repeat for remaining holes. Snocaddie does not explain the above scenario to you so you must come up with the above procedure or come up with your own. Because this device does so much you have to be familiar with the buttons and what they do.

3rd, in order to see the next fairway you must either put in your score or manually move it to the next hole.

4th, it doesn't work with a Mac, something I hope they are working on

I bought the iGolf in april 2009 and was delighted. I had trouble with turning it on. After joining igolf I had more problems with downloading the coarses I wanted. After using it for a few months it started to shut down in the middle of my golf game. Then I would turn it on again and it was ok. After 8 months of use and constant on and off it shut down and would not come back on. I e-mail the igolf company as I had registered this and thought it had a one year warranty as described in the user manual.The responce was they could fix it for $81. I was not happy at all and would not recommend this proudcut.

Well, I received this as a Christmas gift and I read all the negative reviews and have to say on initial startup, I couldn't disagree more. With much trepidation, I found the installation and startup very easy and flawless! I installed on my PC and laptop with ease. Unfortunately, there is snow on the ground and I can't try it on the course. Perhaps the software has improved, but so far I am pleasantly surprised. Yearly cost is a little disturbing, but if it works, to me it's worth the expense as I play many different courses, especially when on vacation. I used the SG3 earlier in year and loved it, hopefully this performs as well.

I upgraded my MacBook with Snow Leopard. Now I can't sync the caddie and so I can't access courses or upgrade software. SkyCaddie Support says they do not have a fix and are "working on it." After 3 months, there is still no fix. Along with the annual fees and the course lockout if you don't renew, I'd say buy something else, particularly if you use a Mac with Snow Leopard.

I took this range finder on my local course and found that it was off 12-15 yards on most holes. I compared it to the yard markers on the sprinkler heads which were the most accurate markings on the course according to the pro shop. On most holes it was showing 12-15 yards longer but on a couple holes it was 8-10 yards short. This of course makes a big difference in club selection. The next day I drove the course with my neighbor who had a different brand GPS range finder. I compared my Golf Buddy Pro to his and found that his was close to the course markers but mine were off as I have described.

The Golf Buddy Pro did do a nice job of automatically finding the couple courses that I played and moved from hole to hole great. I still like the size of it and the graphic read outs. The idea of no monthly or yearly fees was attractive but it has to be accurate to be useable.

Works very well so far but not perfect. I have found that every so often it drops the fairway. You need to go back and change the hole to the one your on (three times a round). Another thing is to be sure and update your GPS at the website (Its free,lots of updates). Overall It has really helped my game and I am happy with the unit. I would recommend it compared to having a monthly or annual membership. It really is a very good deal for the price. It does everything that Gof Buddy advertises. Just turn it on when you get to the course and it will find you..Very very user friendly.

I received this as a gift from my wife after my sky caddie was stolen. It works about the same as the sky caddie. They are both close to accurate. They both have their moments. When I opened the box and charged it, the unit showed it was registered to another. I called the old owner as his phone number was in the unit. The old owner told me that he returned it go golfbuddy almost 11 months ago, as he found it to be inaccurate too much of the time.

The GolfBuddy representative offered to replace the unit, but it would be very inconvenient to do so, as I am on vacation and would be without any unit for 30 days.

I suggest that you open the unit at the store, as I have heard this has happened before.

Does what It's supposed to do, I am a "new" golfer, so every course is new to me The Flyovers are help full to me to, so that when I step up to tee off at least I know where I need to hit the ball, so, I'll have a good position for my second shot. Some times however in some of the flyovers it's difficult to distinguish between fairway and waterhazard they look the same color. On bright days I need to shade the screen to see flyovers, No problem with battery life. or downloading courses, Overall very helpful to me as am very poor at estimating distances, and it helps me choose the right club. Now if it could only help me find my lost balls it would be the perfect tool.

This item is advertised as Mac compatible, but it was not compatible with my Leopard 10.5.8 Operating System. After downloading files a Customer Service Representative sent, I was able to initialize the uPro and download 4 courses after paying $120 for 50 courses. I took the device out to play the next day, but turned it off after a couple of holes because it didn't offer any information that I didn't already have on the Cart's GPS Screen. As I was leaving the course, I tried to turn it back on to show a friend. It was dead. So, I immediately returned it to Amazon. However, uPro is refusing to refund the 4 courses that I downloaded, so I am in a Credit Card Dispute with them, which I will easily win since the information was never used and I returned the device. Advice - don't buy this piece of junk.

I've played about 30-35 rounds with the device so far, and I've decided to switch back to my sky caddie. The uPro would sometimes take as many as 10 minutes to make itself ready for use, determining what course we were playing, etc. Many times I would need to reboot it at least once when it got hung-up after being turned on. Probably 10-12 of my rounds involved re-calibrating the device from a fixed point on the golf course because the indicated distances were off by 10 yards or so. The automatic hole advance feature was terrible and I had to turn it off because it put us on the next hole too soon. I will say that once the uPro was on, calibrated, and indicating the correct hole, it worked as advertised and was very accurate, but there were just too many small problems to deal with.

I was very surprised by the build quality of this unit. Not very good at all. I bought this unit for my Dad for Christmas while I bought myself the Garmin. I suspect I may need to return this unit (If that's even possible) and get him something else. Seems so overly complicated while many other units seem so simple.

I was aware of the yearly subscription fee but have recently read that if you do not continue with the subscription, they wipe the maps from your unit. I probably should have read up on that before I purchased the unit. I would not have purchased it had I known.

The software is buggy on the unit while the desktop software, although not completely tested, seems to work other then the fact that my unit STILL says not registered to anyone even though I filled in the forms correctly and synced it.

I like the GPS, it works great. The only drawback is that it is pretty thick so that you really cant put it in your pocket and just pull it out when you are ready to hit. You have to either clip it on your belt (which impedes your swing) or leave it in the cart or with your caddy. If they could get the same technology onto a thin device, I think it would be much improved.

I would not want to play an unknown course again without my Sky Caddie.

I had an SG3 that served me well for 2 years, but I wanted to upgrade to the color SG5. I have been using it now for about 4 months and really can't say anything bad about it. Lately the foursome I have been playing with 3 of us have a GPS unit and 1 has a Laser System. I'm the only one with a SkyCaddie, the other 2 GPS units are different brands but are new color models in the $300 to $400 range, and both have the touch screen features. I won't name those brands,since I don't own them, and to be honest I'm glad I don't own them. What we started to notice is that about 75% of the time the 3 GPS units all had different yardage, anywhere from 3 yards to up to a max of 14 yards. The one constant was that my buddy with the laser always had the same yardage as me with my SG5. What was also interesting is that when we all used our 3 different GPS units to mark the distane of one of our shots, we all got the same distance for the shot, no variance. The other 2 GPS units don't charge a yearly fee for their course database, I do pay an annual fee of $29.95 for all the courses in CA. The other 2 guys started to do some investigating why their units seemed to be inaccurate at times. The conclusion that we all reached is that SkyCaddie is the only manufacture that actually has people out there walking the courses and recording the data based on where they are standing in relationship to the GPS readings they get. Seems the other companies base their measurements on ariel data and mapping programs. Here is a quote from one of those manufacturers in their FAQ section regarding how they collect their data: "The (product name) golf course data is collected from aerial and satellite imagery from various vendors. We then use that imagery to digitize the course feature. Once complete, course routing and scorecard information is assigned for each hole". Also if you read the fine print that free course data without a fee could someday have a fee, "At the current time, we are offering map updates to include new and updated courses at no charge. At some point in the future, it is possible that (company name)will begin to charge a nominal fee for course updates". Again they aren't saying you will defiantly be paying a fee someday, just that it is possible. Probably the lawyers had them throw that in just to cover their butts, so its probably not a concern. Last Saturday the other 2 guys both showed up with a new SG5 (bought on Amazon), their other units are now listed on Ebay. And we all have the same yardage now all the time. Our buddy with the laser gets his measurement to the pin and it takes in account the slope, nice if you can see the pin. Also my hands shake too much when using the laser. The SG5 won't improve your game if you don't have consistent distances nailed down with your clubs, but if you do you will see more balls on the green, not short or off the green.

One other thing is all these guys that complain about how the SG5 won't load up on their computer or freeze up and have too be returned. I don't pay attention to those reviews, some of these folks have messed up or old systems or aren't computer literate to follow directions. And yes calling SkyCaddie support is not a pleasant experience, if you do more talking then listening. I have found that if I email in my question support gives me a detailed and accurate answer within anywhere from 20 minutes to a couple hours.

My experience and that of my friends is that free course data may not be as accurate as the information from SkyCaddie, it's worth $29 a year to get accuracy.

I own a first generation SkyCaddie. The device works OK but does not do all of the things that they advertised. On a couple of occasions I have called the help line to ask a question. All I ever got was a voice message telling me that they will call me back. Never once did they return my call. I sent emails but those were never answered either.

My membership ends in December, and I debated about renewing my subscription. Eventually, I renewed in March. They collected full payment then re-started my membership as of December instead of March, thereby cheating me out of three months of use. They did not respond to my emails or to my phone calls.

I cannot recommend SkyCaddie at all. Customer service is the worst I have ever experienced. They are not interested in satisfied customers. They are only interested in selling GPS units. I suggest you try one of the other golf GPS providers and forget about SkyCaddie.

I have the GolfLogix and was looking for a little added protection from the bumping it takes on my bag or in the golf cart. I ordered this cover sleeve and am very happy with it. It fits perfectly and yet allows for full access to the various buttons. It is a little spongy feel, kind of like a divers wet suit but not that thick.

The attached clip is a nice bonus as the GolfLogix by itself does not have one of these and it can be a challenge to put this where you want to without one.

If you have a GolfLogix I would highly recommend one of these covers.

I gave one to my wife for Christmas - she had been _very_ good that year - and we took it along down to Florida. It knew the smaller of two courses at a golf community, and also knows our executive course locally in Maryland. It had no problem finding the course information, and the only confusion came when two tee boxes were right next to each other. Moving a few feet closer to the proper tee box solved that; it gave us yardages to all sorts of hazards; all in all, it did exactly what it said it would, with no muss or fuss.

The only bad mark goes not against the unit, but the web site; perhaps it was overwhelmed on Christmas morning, but the registration process would not complete. We'll try again and see how it goes then...

Terrific unit, glad I bought it! (And so is the missus...)

The Golf Buddy is at best medicre. What is really terrible is the customer service. The Warranty doesnt get respected. There was a manufacturer defect with the LCD, but the warranty didnt cover the defect after only 2 weeks. I called Golf Buddy directly, and after speaking to many managers and even the Vice President. They started with an estimate of $75 - $100, and then went down to $50 and then finally $35. I will never buy another Golf Buddy, and highly recommend noone else buying thsi product. I have never experienced this sort of poor and unprofessional customer service/care before.

First of all, this is not an advertisement review. I've read some from other sites that sound like a sales guy, or the company it self, wrote it.

I purchased the Golf Buddy Tour GPS in April '09 and it's been great. Of all the features, what helps me the most is the front / back of the green measurements. It really increases my comfort level when picking my club, knowing I won't come up way short when the pins in the back or I won't air-mail the pin when it's up front. That only saves a few shots a round. The easy features I like is that you don't have to select the course either. When I get to the course, it figures out what course I'm at when in auto mode. I'm also not a big fan of subscription rates you get with other GPS's. Overall, it's a good chunk of money to put out but, in my opinion, well worth it. It's the same amount you would pay for a good driver, but with the GB Tour, you use it on ever hole.

I've had the Approach 5 GPS device for a full season now. The device works great. The problem is if there is an error on a course map, it's impossible to get someone to change it.

There is a system in place to make a change on the website. I've submitted multiple changes on different courses and not one was fixed. On one course, the Golf Club changed the order of the holes. I made a submission 3 times over a 4 month period and nothing was ever done. The most frustrating part of making a change is that after you make the submission, you never hear anything from Garmin.

I also own a Golflogix GPS device. I've submitted changes to them and have gotten responses back the same day.In some cases Golf Logix didn't have a course I was about to play. I emailed them a scanned scorecard and I received the course via email in 24 hours.

The Garmin device looks great. The features are great. It's easy to use, but without accurate course data, it is not your best choice of GPS devices.

For the high premium they charge for the device, I suggest that you spend it on a GolfLogix device.

I received my Garmin Approach in early January and it is exactly what I wanted and expected. When I walk the course I attach it to my bag, glance at it before selecting my club and I can CONCENTRATE ON MY GOLF GAME. I did a lot of research and it has really paid off. There are many things to think about when you are walking or riding toward your ball. You want to be thinking about the next shot and how to best play it and not the GPS unit. Adjusting the pin location, selecting the best distance to lay up to, etc. only take a couple of seconds do do on the touch screen. Also, it is great to measure your shots to get a better feel as to how far you really carry the ball. I don't score with it as I want to record other information in addition to the raw score.

Got mine off of amazon about 2 weeks ago, $370 plus $6 shipping. got here in less than 6 business days and was loaded with latest versions of SW, Gps SW and courses. Finally got a chance to play and it works fine. My eyes aren't the best, and sometimes the image was a bit dim and the #s a bit small, but with glasses, everything was clear. I especially liked the features of finding a course near you (it popped up the name of the course i was on immediately, and the feature that shows your distance to green and hazards from where the ball is. drawings of holes are like the ones on the scorecard (fairways only). Distances same as my playing partners sky caddie. but the advantage is you can see all say 3 traps and water location around the green in one picture with distances from where you are. A nice unit for the casual player. I also have a skycaddie 2.5 which I'm willing to sell. My handicap is about 1.5 strokes for each club in my bag plus 6-8 for the putter. The garmin give me instant information which I am occasionally able to make use of in my choice of club. Rememember-"old golfers never die- they just lose their balls" Energizer batteries have lasted 36 holes with some charge left . I estimate about 10-11 hours)

I love this product. I like to play a lot of courses with blind shots so this comes really handy. There are times when the hazards are just perfect for my tee shots and I get into trouble. This saves me a couple of lost balls. I like the ability to point at a location and get the distance from where I am to that location. I can do this for the green also. When it is a very big green I can at least point it to front or center or back. When I get into trouble and outside the fairway I like the ability to look at how far I am from the green and if there are any hazards between me and the green. The fact that I know where I can relative to the green and fairway is great. I ten to compound mistakes not knowing how to get back on track when I get into trouble. Like all GPS it is a time saver. I like the fact that it finds the nearest course to where I am so it is ready to go when I play. I can also view courses I've not played yet while at the hotel. This equipment means no more looking at yard sticks. I've not used it in rain so I do not know how waterproof will work but I will not be afraid to use it. My battery life last 4 rounds in the summer. Have not tried it in winter. I don't use the score feature so that might save some energy. I use the alkaline Duracell. My hope that this product gets slimmer. It is not bad to hang it on my belt while not hitting a club but I take it off when I hit the ball. Just that weird feeling hanging until I get used to it. I'd like to see a better screen also. My friend have a iPhone and that is clearer but I am not critical about it. Just a wish.

I bought the G5 in Nov. '09. I checked the list of courses before buying. All the courses I played in the North Myrtle Beach area were there. The first time I used it the course was NOT there. I called customer service, who was extremely helpful. The G5 needed to be updated with the latest courses. After completing the update, all the courses were now available.

I find the G5 yardage to be extremely accurate. It is better than some of the course markings. If you are laying up before a hazzard, the touch screen feature will give you the exact yardage to it.

I highly reccommend this unit.

I have had the unit for about 6 months and Garmin is good about updating the courses, after the annual fee of course. The only real problem I have had is the USB connector on the unit. Mine is very hard to connect and the pins are very easy to break. I have had to get 2 replacement cables so far. I have asked Golflogix for a fix but have had no response, but they have been good about sending replacement cables, at least for now while it is still under warranty.

Versatile, simple to use, and, as far as I can tell, accurate! Some of its best features are a little non-obvious. For example, on those rare occasions when I hit my drive into the trees, I always mark the tee, then go out the distance I think I hit the ball, in the direction I hit it, and start looking. Makes it a lot easier to judge how far into the woods to look! It's also very useful when I'm in the wrong fairway (are you beginning to get an idea of my game?). Another non-obvious place where I use it a lot is near the green -- there is a big difference between a 40-yd pitch and a 50-yd pitch!

One word of warning: Don't clip it to your bag with the included clip, especially if you bag is on a cart. On several occasions, my GPS has bounced out of the clip. Fortunately, on both occasions, I discovered it was missing before I had gone too far and was able to go back and retrieve it, but you might not be so lucky!

After much research, I ordered the Golflogix GPS by Garmin a month ago. I ignored the complaints about connection problems and poor customer service since so many of the reviews were positive. I used the Super Saver Shipping and knew from previous experiences that it would take 14-17 days to receive the product. I planned to use the Golflogix GPS during a holiday golf trip and received it in plenty of time, 15 days later. I tried to connect and register the Golflogix GPS (necessary to load the courses and use the device) several times on my three computers (desktop, laptop, and netbook all with XP) with no luck. I emailed Golflogix and received a reply stating someone would get back with me (they are only available during weekday business hours on mountain time). I waited the weekend and three weekdays with no further email response from Golflogix. I then contacted Golflogix customer service by phone. After approximately an hour and a half of trying different processes including taking a suggeted steak knife to pull out the pins on the device end of the cable, getting cut off once, uninstalling and reinstalling the Golflogix software and restarting my computer over and over, the not overly friendly Golflogix representative informed me that I must have a defective cable. He took my mailing information after much difficulty trying to enter it correctly, put me on hold for 5-10 minutes, and informed me that I will receive a weird looking wire in 7-10 days since it will not be mailed until they get time after the holidays (they will be closed for a long weekend and then busy). He reports the wire should solve the problem. Needless to say, I have been unable to use the device during my golf trip . I am very disappointed and would not recommend the product or their customer service to anyone else. If possible, I will return the Golflogix GPS--the representative indicated that they would not replace the unit. I am hoping I can return it since I did not purchase it directly from Golflogix. If not possible to return the Golflogix GPS, I will try the "weird looking wire" and update my review.

I purchased the Golflogic GPS after watching the infomercial. The product seemed like it was easy to use and would work at the courses I travel to. Once I got the unit I tried to load the software and get the unit to sync up with the computer. It would not go past the loading software segment of the set up. I tried several tiomes and had a friend try to get it working, but to no avail. Hence, it's headed back to Amazon!!!!!

I bought this for $175 and paid $30 for the annual membership. I downloaded 101 courses, all that I could think of that I might play.

Pros:

-Cost

-Ease of use

-8 Custom points per hole (lay up, carry distances, etc.)

-No need to pay membership every year

-Very responsive customer service

-40 courses stored on device!!

-Can share courses with others

Cons:

-No rechargeable batteries (make sure you have spare batteries in your bag at all times)

-Slow upload/downloads of courses

Overall, I am very happy with this device. Many friends have the Sky Caddie and I am still very glad I purchased this device.

"SkyCaddie SG2 Golf GPS" 2009-10-13

I am somewhat amazed by the negative reviews. While my experiences with SkyCaddie and the SG2 may not be "perfect", I am totally satisfied with the product and customer support.

I bought my SG2 in February of 2006 and it came with a one-year warranty. After 10 months, it quit receiving the satellite signal. I opened a ticket with SkyCaddie. They had me do the all the steps in the manual to reset the device. After no success they shipped me a return authorization and prepaid packaging. The factory was not able to fix the issue, so they quickly sent me a new replacement unit and also added a few months onto the back-end of my warranty. Great Customer Service.

A few months later (after the warranty expired) the small screw that holds the belt clip backed out and I lost the screw. Still had the clip, but not the screw. After trying to find a local replacement (Radio Shack, etc.), I called SkyCaddie again. This time they sent me the replacement screw and a new clip at no charge. This time I used lock-tight on the replacement screw. Great Customer Service.

So the battery is somewhere between 3.75 years to 2.75 years old (depends upon if they used my original battery with the replacement unit). Today, I finally felt like I needed to order a new battery since the battery life is down to about 5 hours. Ordered it for $25 with free shipping from a non-SkyCaddie web site. I play around 45 rounds per year, so I have gotten probably 150+ rounds with the original battery.

Recently upgraded my home PC and now I no longer has serial DB2 ports. I went to Best Buy and bought a serial to USB converter cable and have no issues with downloads, syncs, etc.

I like the new CaddieSync Desktop software that you download and it is very user friendly. Also, I was glad to see SkyCaddie offered the Play 36 Worldwide Plan for $130 and 36 months. This took care of some of my concerns about being limited to only one state.

Overall, I truly believe that the SkyCaddie has paid for itself just from my winnings in tournaments. Without a rangefinder or GPS unit, you (if not using a high dollar human caddie) are giving up strokes to the rest of the field.

I've not had any problems with unit. The distances always seems to be accurate and match what my friends laser finders say.

I've been able to down load every course I've wanted to play.

The unit is well made and sturdy. Mine has bounced out of the cart more than one survived.

I have had my SG2 for two years and it has worked without any probelms. The battery allows me to play 36 holes before it requires to be recharged. The only probelm was the rubber cover fell off where you plug in the charge cord, but it's not a big deal. It is very easy to use and to download new courses if you have some computer skills. I have thought about getting a newer model that has color and more info but all I really want to know is simply how far I am from the front, center and back of the green.

I have had my SG2 for about a year. I turn mine on just before leaving for the first tee box right after I load my clubs on the cart and by the time I get there I have locked onto all available satelites, usually 8 to 12 satelites and signal strength is at max. Even on the most cloudy days I still have good to fair signal strength and it is still very accurate. Battery life is excellent and have never had a problem, even when playing 27 holes straight. The annual fee to SkyGolf is well worth the money and all of my 4 star courses show each and every hazard, the distance to it and to carry it. It is easily programable and even shows the distance of each shot you make if you want it too. I have yet to have a problem with it. Great aide to my golf game. Thanks

I recently ordere a Sky Caddie GPS and three times the product which was supplied was defective. The first one couldn't access the satellites and had to be returned. The second one had three screws in the case missing and fell apart on use. The third one was alreadey used by someone else with a different name programmed and it failde also. I feel that the units were refurbished and not new as advertised, and I felt very disappointed with the Amazon quality control.

I purchased and returned. I then bought the Garmin Approach. Personally, I like the aerial view of the current hole. I like seeing the hazards on a lot of blind shots at the courses I play and be able to point and get measurement from outside the fairway and back on track when I hit bad shots. This is definitely much cheaper than Garmin's or the top of the line comparable products in the 400-500 range. I gave it a 3 because it is missing those aerial views.

I have been using this for a year now and can say it is the most simple GPS on the market. I have played with others that over load you with data that you don't need. GolfLogix give me the numbers and information that I need, you just turn it on and go. I also the to fact that is is rugged, I have left it in a cart during a storm, dropped it on the cart path, steeped on it and it keep working. It does not have a color screen and show me a picture of the green or do a flyover for the hole is just gives me the numbers I need to get on the green with out having to play with buttons to do get the numbers.

Ive had this charger for several years now and its still working well. In fact the batteries that comes included are still working fine. Holding many days of charge (I use them for a digital camera) so I recommend this product.

It is very fast (like 4 hrs for 4 batteries) of course not like those 15 min chargers you can buy today, but since it automatically suts off i dont care so much about that.

I've owned the SkyCaddie SG4 for 2 years now. I hate it. Worst computer/user interface ever. It's as if it was programmed using the same technology as the Commador 64. Need to remove battery everytime I start it up otherwise it won't find a signal. Doesn't work on cloudy days. Don't understand why it take the SkyCaddie 15+ minutes to locate my position when my iPhone can do it in couple seconds. Find another brand or if you have an iPhone, download an app for a one time charge of $30 versus the $30 annual fee to use this doorstop of a gadget

I am finised with this product. Although adequate on course, it is impossible to download courses in less than an hour. It should be the poster child for computer hell. I would rather have the yips than be forced into another session of updating my software and downloading a course. Do not buy this product.

I bought two of these recently, one for a friend. Was out playing the other day with him and another guy. We all had different sky caddies, the 2.5, the 4 and the 5. They all agreed with each other all the time, they were extremely accurate and brilliantly mapped. The only difficulty with the SG4 is, why oh why do they have that awful connecting lead. Beware and do not overtighten the little grub-screw. What was wrong with the standard USB connector on the 2.5 and 5. Also, a little tip. If you fit the connecting lead upside down you can charge the unit via a USB port. Found that out by accident. All in all, brilliant piece of equipment, awful connector. The new software and features on skygolf make this a great value, older type system with all modern bells and whistles

Must agree with most, very bad power cable design. That being said. The SG4 I have works great, have had no problems with GPS issues for 3 years. The threads did strip on the adapter screw, contacted the company, they were very helpful, did have to pay for shipping, but that was all. Received product back in approx 3 weeks. No problem since I live in the UP of MI and didn't need to use the product. I've been using for the last 4 1/2 months with no problems. So if you want to gamble on the poor power design, the product is a great buy.

Update, also upgraded product and had problems with computer recognizing device. Contacted customer service who were extremely helpful. Walked me through several questions. When connecting the cable to the device the cord must run down on the back of unit before the computer will recognize. Once I did that no problems with computer or downloading courses or the new program upgrade. Hope this was helpful.

I bought this in Dec 2007. When it works, it's great to have on the course. But I have had problems with it.

1) The cable that you charge it with and use to synch with your PC to download courses is difficult to attach. You have to work at it.

2) Initially, I often had trouble getting it to connect up with satellites and give me a reading on the course. Then suddenly, on, say Hole 13, it would come to life. This problem seemed to happen on cloudy days. However, earlier this year (2009), SkyGolf came forth with a software upgrade that improved performance remarkably. I no longer have this problem.

3) Now the device isn't recognized by my PC and SkyGolf says I must send it in for repair at a cost of $35-$100. It cost over $300 to buy in the first place and I must pay $30 a year to download courses. To have it malfunction after a year and a half and have to pay up to $100 to fix it just seems a bit much.

If I were going to buy a similar device today, I think I'd look around for a less expensive, more reliable device.

I have found the Sonocaddie, very usefull.

Getting started was pretty simple and downloading my regular courses only took a few minutes.

Meterage/yardage is pretty accurate between 1-3m difference from local markers. I don't think you will get much better than that!

Some of the more off the beaten track courses, that I have played in South Africa, are not mapped properly, but as I do not play them often enough I do not feel that this is a great disadvantage.

On the whole I am very satisfied with my purchase I think this it is a great product!

i could not be happier. down loading courses is a snap. getting them to your device is a click away. one time fee will give most users all the courses they will ever need. you can transfer courses on and off your device in a couple of clicks. the display is very clear even in bright sunlight. i live in new mexico so we have a lot of those days. at [...] bucks it is like stealing. my buddies have ones they paid close to [...] dollars for and theirs do have color, ooohh. the battery last for 4 rounds and still has power left. i also like the one time fee of [...] bucks. you can dnload all the courses you think you might ever play to your computer, you get 100 choices, and then transfer them to your device as you need them. it really is easy. i would not hesitate to recommend this to all my golf buds

Well, I purchased this for my 10th wedding anniversary. I read all the reviews and thought i would take a chance. I mean, what else can a golfer possibly need? I couldn't think of anything else. I am so happy that i made this purchase. Once we got thru winter and cold spring, he has finally got it out to use. It was a simple procedure to subscribe to the course downloads. It is a one time fee because you basically don't need anymore than 100 or so courses. (He doesn't). Once it downloaded, off he went. He loves his gold gps! he says that it is very accurate. So I scored on this purchase. one thing to mention that I had read about in the reviews was about the little clip holder. His opinion was that it was just ok and that it did fall off once or twice during his game. So, if they can fix that problem all will be good to go. Overall - extremely satisfied with the iGolf neo GPS

I was looking for a Golf GPS I was using my IPhone with a free golf GPS Application and it was exactly that free. I looked and read the reviews on the NEO and decided since it was only $100+ why not, but I'm here to tell you that it works it really works. I have downloaded several courses into it and I have checked it with the course markers and it is right on the money. Some of the reviews mentioned that the belt clip is not secure and I will agree with that, but since I like to walk and play golf if it fell out I would notice it but I also touch it every so often to make sure it's still there. I would recommend this item to anyone who wants a starter GPS it want let you down well it has not let me down. Thanks

I have owned and used my 2.5 Sky Caddie for over a year now. I have used it in my home state and in another when I went on vacation. All the courses I needed were available and not too expensive. $10 to add the extra state. I am not a computer whiz so the first time I downloaded I took more time than I do now. They changed the web site also so the first time I used that I was confused. I was able to call the company and got a real person who was very helpful. The unit is small and I carry it on my belt. Easy to read. Sometimes the bunkers are not shown clearly but most of the time the distances make sense. It has been a great help to me when chosing clubs. I did have occasion to play a course in SE ASIA and I did not have my Sky Caddie with me and it felt very strange to have to pace off distances! For its cost and utility, it is one of the best golf "things" I own.

Very easy to set up and use. Very acurate when compared to range markers on home course. Saves time determining range by not having to search for sprinkler head or other markers and estimating distance to center of green. Have not used on another course but anticipate it will be of even greater help on other than home course. Cannot say it has improved my score but has helped in club selection and maybe improved score will happen in the future.

The Golf Buddy Pro is absolutely worthless. It is off by anywhere from 10 - 20 yards on approach shots. I called customer service and downloaded a firmware upgrade. I also reinstalled my home course. It is still less accurate than if I guessed at yardage. Customer service was unable to help me. They gave me a number for returns. Needless to say, I could not get through. they don't bother to tell you that the unit measures distances in a straight line from tee to green, which will have an impact on significant doglegs. However, this can't get the yardage correct on a straight little par 3. I warn everyone not to purchase this unit.

I received this Golf Buddy Pro for my birthday approx. 1-1/2 years ago. I used it for 1 year perfectly...no problems. One day I turned it on and nothing! No power, no signal, nothing. I ordered a $50 replacement battery, because that must be what's wrong...right? Still nothing! Now I'm not only out the $275 for the unit, but also $50 for a battery. I've since downloaded an app to my iPhone that has more options and works much better. It was only $29.00 and has thousands of courses and no fees. Besides a great GPS unit, it also tracks my score and much more. It's user friendly and the customer/sersvice response is wonderful. I notified them that my usual Tuesday golf course had reversed their nines and within 2-3 days I heard back from them that they had switched everything (including the score card). Wonderful response time. I don't think I will consider going back to another style GPS.

I've had my Golf Buddy for 3 months now. I can't comment on the other GPS units out there but Golf Buddy is GREAT!!! I have had no technical problems with my unit. I will advise you this. Before you go to a golf course make sure the course is downloaded into your unit. Just because it's on the Computer Directory it may not be loaded into your unit. I found out the hard way. Checked the computer and there was the course. Arrived at the course and Golf Buddy couldn't find it. Called Golf Buddy and they Emailed me the directions on how to download courses (no charge of course). I am not very good with computers and downloading stuff (that's why God gave us children)but these were very easy to follow directions. I followed them and bingo it worked great. You can also delete courses if you wish (sorry Alaska I don't think I will be coming there to play golf)and add at anytime. The great thing is NO YEARLY FEE'S. Hit'em Long and Stright and enjoy your GOLF BUDDY.

Every time I used it the yardage was wrong. I researched and found that the reason is that they use satelite images and a copy of the scorecard to set distance points. Skycaddy seems to be the only GPS that has people walk every course and that is why it is so accurate. It only holds 10 courses at a time but the yardage is always dead on

Even if you charged it after your last round of golf, it will be dead when you pull it out if it sat for more than a few days.

I've owned a SkyCaddie SG3 for some time and, weary of its annual fees, glacial operating speed, and pedestrian display, I decided to go color. I purchased the Garmin Approach G5, but its display is very difficult to see in normal outdoor conditions. So I also purchased the Callaway uPro. I played an entire round on my home course, with all three GPS units mounted on the cart. My findings:

Build quality: All three units are rugged, with great fit-and-finish. The Garmin gets the nod, because it's waterproof. The Callaway is water-resistant, and you can purchase a watertight skin for an outrageous $24.99 to protect it further. The SkyCaddie is not recommended for use in the rain.

Size: The Callaway uPro is the smallest and thinnest, about the size of an LG Chocolate phone. The SG3 is similar height and width to the uPro, but much thicker and heavier. The biggest of all is the Garmin, the size of an iPhone and four times as thick. It's wide, heavy, and not good for the pocket.

Accuracy: The three units properly mapped my home course, agreeing on nearly all distances (within 6 yards of each other) and hazards.

GPS acquisition: The old-technology SG3 takes forever to acquire GPS, sometimes more than five minutes. Both the Garmin and the uPro acquire satellites almost instantly. The uPro has technology that, once it locks onto satellites, it really keeps them. After locking on, I took the unit indoors, and even put it in my pants pocket. It never had to re-acquire. Advantage: uPro.

Getting courses: The Garmin wins handily. All 10,000+ available courses come preloaded in its 1GB memory. No annual fees, no paid memberships. The Garmin Approach G5 offered every course I cared to search. Of course, your mileage may vary.

To make the most of your SkyCaddie, you need to pay for an annual membership on their website, and download courses individually. Some SkyCaddie memberships allow you to download as many courses as you want from all over the world...however, the unit's paltry memory will only hold a few at a time. The uPro also requires that you sign up on their website (no annual memberships, though). With the uPro, Basic Mode (an alphanumeric color screen that resembles that of a SkyCaddie) is free for unlimited courses. For Pro Mode (the nifty aerial photography view of each course) you pay for only the courses you wish to play, a la carte. Your first Pro Mode course is free.

Information: All units show distances to the front/middle/back of greens. The SG3 also shows hazards on the same screen, but it doesn't give you hazard carry distances, like the uPro does. The Garmin shows the entire hole, including hazards. But showing the entire hole means that the illustrations of hazards are tiny, as is the accompanying yardage text. Coupled with the Garmin's dim display, it's pretty useless. Curiously, the Garmin apparently doesn't consider trees to be obstacles, so they're not represented at all on the graphical display. The uPro (in Pro Mode) shows every tree and hazard - in fact, the entire hole, as photographed from satellite. It's like viewing my actual course (including my house!) from above. There's absolutely nothing like it.

On the home screen, both the SG3 and the uPro also give you the time of day, battery strength, and GPS signal strength. The Garmin gives you none of the above. You need to briefly press the power button to see the time. It also shows a battery icon, but that never moved during my round.

Battery: The Garmin and SG3 both take AA batteries, whether alkaline, NiMh rechargeable, or lithium ion. With any AA type, both units easily complete at least two rounds. The uPro uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Unlike SkyCaddie models that use internal lithium ion batteries, which are a real horror show to replace (SkyCaddie recommends you send the unit back), the Callaway uPro battery easily drops in. Callaway says it takes three hours to charge, but it didn't take me anywhere near that long. UPro battery life is 6-12 hours, depending on how bright you set the display's backlight. With my display settings (see Display, below), I easily completed a round with plenty to spare. As far as battery preferences go: For some, constantly recharging and changing out AAs is a grind. For others, recharging (and eventually, re-purchasing) internal lithium-ion batteries ($27 for the uPro) is just as bad, especially considering that the battery can leave you high and dry mid-round if you forget to charge it the night before. To each his own.

Display: The SG3 is monochrome, so it doesn't stand a chance. Its display is dim and boring, but it does give you a button on the side for a backlight. The screen sizes on the SG3 and uPro are nearly identical. The Garmin's touchscreen display is nearly iPhone-big, and drop-dead gorgeous...when you're at home. Take it outside, and it washes out to the point of uselessness. Worse yet, to save power, the display times out a few seconds after you touch it, making it even dimmer. You touch the screen to wake it up, but when you touch the screen, the unit thinks you want to measure a distance, so the measurement feature pops up. You need to hit the "Done" button to exit that. There's no way to increase the screen timeout or disable the screen dimming feature. Also, since the Garmin is a touchscreen, it's a massive fingerprint magnet, so it only looks pretty for the first hole. The uPro wins the display contest handily, with a bright and functional screen. You can play two ways: graphically (Pro Mode), showing the course via aerial photography, or with big, bright alphanumeric text (Basic Mode). Since golf courses have very low contrast (lots of green color and not much else), I defaulted to the Basic Mode for easy readability. For the aerial view, you can always hit the Pro Mode button on the side of the unit, as it's much more useful around the green. The uPro's default setting is to power-save the display after (I think) 45 seconds. Unlike the Garmin, which dims its display, the uPro goes blank until you hit a button, which is an enormous buzzkill. Fortunately, you can get around this. You can change to a longer timeout, or disable standby altogether. As the uPro has a very bright display, what I did was take the backlight down to 25% (from a default 70%), and disabled standby completely. I easily completed a round with plenty of battery life to spare this way. The uPro and the Garmin use a reflective LCD technology that actually makes the display brighter in direct sunlight. The uPro's version of this technology worked far better than the Garmin's. The only time the Garmin display looked remotely readable was when you aimed it directly at the sun.

Just for fun, I took along my iPod Touch 2G, to compare all the displays outdoors. I figured that the iPod's conventional LCD wouldn't compete with the reflective technology of the Garmin and the uPro. Wrong. The iPod destroyed both of them. It wasn't even close. So, if you have an iPhone (the iPod Touch won't do GPS), you may want to look into the golf GPS apps at the App Store. If you do decide to use an iPhone, just remember, it won't stand up to being dropped, kicked, and tossed around like these three ruggedized units, and it for sure ain't the least bit water-resistant.

Hole-to-Hole: The simpler SkyCaddie wins here. It automatically advances to the next hole. If there's any confusion (you're playing past the current hole, for example), it'll ask you if you want to move to the next hole. If you're starting on Number 10, for example, the SkyCaddie makes that selection easier as well, with a grid from which you can select holes via cursor. The Callaway Auto Hole Advance is kind of a drag. If you're anywhere near the green, Auto-Advance jumps to the next hole. You can't measure your 40-yard pitch to the current green. And when they say Auto, they mean Auto. In Auto-Advance mode, there's no way to back up to the current hole, or any previous hole, for that matter. The only way out is to go to either Manual Advance, or Manual Advance With Prompt (it asks you to press the center button to advance). Hitting a button on each hole is tedious. The Garmin Auto-Advances sequentially, but if you jump around (skipping a couple of holes to get around slow play), you need to touch the screen arrows for each hole advance.

Settings: The Garmin gives you almost nothing to customize, as it is both very intelligently designed and extremely automated. It would have been nice to be able to crank the screen brightness, or at least extend the timeout. Both the SG3 and the uPro give you a host of settings to mess with, including screen brightness (contrast only with the SG3), hole advance preferences, and much more.

Cost of ownership: The Garmin and uPro are color, so they're not cheap. If you want to compare apples to apples, you could go to the color SkyCaddie SG5, but be advised that the SG3, SG4, and SG5 are virtually identical in functionality, screen size - basically, EVERYTHING - so you're paying almost $150 more for color alone, which is the cost of a whole 20-inch color TV. (My SG3 is discontinued, so now I'm quoting price from the replacement SG4.) Couple that with the amazing wow factor of both the Garmin and the uPro, and the top-of-the-line color SkyCaddie SG5 is a terrible deal. To the SkyCaddie's cost of ownership, add their totally outrageous annual membership fees. SkyCaddie also charges ridiculous sums of money for stuff like plastic cart mounts and batteries. The Garmin wins here, hands-down, with all available courses preloaded into memory. No fees whatsoever! For accessories, RAM Mounts makes a rock-solid, relatively reasonably-priced cart mount for the Garmin. The uPro, while not requiring you to pay for a membership, makes you download each course. They're all free, if you want to use only Basic Mode. But if you want what makes the unit famous and awesome, which is Pro Mode video previews and flyovers of each hole, you need to pay. If you go for a 20-course package, for example, that's $60. It's still cheaper for most people than SkyCaddie, because there's no annual fee. And the more courses you buy, the cheaper it gets per course. However, uPro accessories such as cart mounts are rarely discounted, and you'll pay more for their little plastic add-ons than you would pay for a complete multi-handset cordless phone system or a new DVD player.

Extras: Each unit has (or will soon have, in the uPro's case) the ability to track scores and aggregate player information. I don't use any of that stuff. No amount of button-pushing or touch-screening could beat the ease and speed of marking stuff down with a pencil.

Wow Factor: The SkyCaddie is deadly dull, with zero Wow Factor, but highly functional. One would think the Garmin, with its big, beautiful touchscreen, would win. However, the screen is just too dim to view the image-based interface in normal outdoor lighting. The Callaway uPro, with its unique video flyovers of every hole, is the winner. While the flyovers may not be great outdoors (golf courses are green-on-green-on-green, so there's little contrast), they're great for previewing new courses in your home before you travel. Beyond that, the uPro comes with several preloaded video tutorials to help you get the most from the unit, and an earbud is in the box, so you can listen to the video narration. Voice Recognition, to allow you to change settings, holes, etc. by voice command, is built into the Callaway uPro, and they say it'll be activated by late 2009.

Summary: Not one of these units is perfect, but the Callaway uPro is the runaway winner.
