"Yes, This Does Come With $70 'Bonus'" 2009-11-28

SkyCaddie arrived today - glad I didn't pay extra to upgrade to faster shipping (just went with standard free shipping)- 4 days from order to delivery.

Posting this 'review' to let others know that this item/listing does come with the $70 of bonus items - travel case, car charger and LCD protector. Description doesn't mention bonus and there is no picture of box.

There is another Amazon listing called 'Super Bundle Pack' (its $20 more) The box in that listing is exactly the same as what I received.

"My SG5 is Super Useful!!!" 2009-11-22
By L. Platt (USA)
I have had The SG5 about a year and it is a very good unit once a person learns how to use it. First I checked out the manual while having the SG5 in my hand to push all the buttons!! Then I downloaded my courses that I play. The best thing I did was, I learned by going out on the course with just my SG5, the manual, and learning how to use the thing without having to worry about playing my next shot. It took about 15 minutes and it all clicked for me and I love my sg5 now. I have had it for a year now with no complaints. You do have to remember to keep it charged but if you like playing with it,like I do, it's easy to remember. The things I like are, the distances seem consistent and accurate, charges fast, turns on quick, small enough, big enough, I can see the display even in bright sun with polarized sunglasses on and shading it with my hand (some of them you can't see with sunglasses on). My play has sped up on courses that are new or unfamiliar to me plus I score better on those courses!!!!

Basically it is my new best friend on the golf course.

 "Great Product!" 2009-10-14
By Vern (NJ USA)
The Skycaddie SG5 is a fantastic device. It is dead accurate, the maps are detailed, and it is easy to use, and their technical support is first rate. Shame that Bandon Dunes Golf Resort doesn't identify with this device, because that was the original reason why I bought it - to enhance my experience there. Oh well, I love it all the same on the myriad of courses I play here at home.

 "Newsflash, I'm a golfer not a computer programmer" 2009-10-13
By Tony E (New York)
I bought this for the simple purpose of measuring the yardage when I am playing golf. You would think that for the $50+ annual fee they charge, you could just plug the Skycaddie in to your PC's USB port, pick a course from the website and it would just download it automatically, unplug it and go play....But no, this is one of the most frustrating products I have ever owned.

First, it can only hold 10 courses. If you travel a bit, you have to remove and then add courses. When I go to download a new course every few months, it first requires that I update the device software multiple times. Or it requires that I update my PC software. I have never had a product which requires so many manual updates. This is after they completely redid the PC synchronization software last year, which took me another hour.

Just when you think you are done, it says there is yet another update available. There is no progress report such as "You have completed 3 of 4 updates." It just keeps saying "Another update is available."

It has taken me 45 minutes tonight just to add a single course to play and I'm on a fast broadband connection.

Then frequently the PC software cannot find the Skycaddie. So I have to start again. It is very finicky about whether the Skycaddie is connected or not, whether it has restarted or not and you cannot even tell when it has restarted, since the Error messages do not correspond to the words on the Skycaddie screen.

How is this for a help message?

Connect the SkyCaddie to an available USB port on your computer.

The tab on the USB cable should face up with the cord going down.

Click Start on your Windows desktop (computer screen).

Select Control Panel.

Click Classic View if items are shown in Category View.

Click System.

Click Hardware , then click Device Manager.

Continue to the next steps for SG3 and SG4 or SG2, SG2.5, and SG5 models.

SG2, SG2.5, and SG5

Click the plus sign next to Ports and you should see CP2101 UART to Bridge Controller.

If the CP2101 UART to Bridge Controller is not listed under ports, click the plus next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers and look for anything that starts with CP210. If CP2101 UART to Bridge Controller is not listed, connect your SkyCaddie to another USB port repeat the above instructions.

If CP2101 UART to Bridge Controller is listed only under Universal Serial bus controllers, follow the next steps.

Right click CP210? and select update driver.

Select Yes, this time only.

If you don't see Yes, this time only, choose the advanced option that usually allows you to install the driver from a list or a specific location.

Select Include this location in the search and click Browse.

Click the plus next to My Computer, then click the plus next to Local Disk or (C:) drive.

Click the plus next to Program Files, then click the plus next to SkyGolf.

Click the plus next to SkyCaddie Desktop. Click the Drivers, then click OK.

Click Next to update the driver.

If you get a message that the driver has not passed Windows logo testing, click Continue anyway.

Click Finish when the update process is complete.

And the process of picking the courses and then downloading them is clumsy.

This product is very poorly designed for its end user market and I would never buy this product again or recommend it to anyone. All of this updating could be done in the background without so much complexity. AS soon as I have time to switch to a different product I will.

By B. Jewett (Tucson, AZ USA)
I am very happy with my GolfLogix GPS system. Many of my friends have the SkyCaddie and my GolfLogix is at least equal to theirs. Usually we are all within 2 yards of each other with the GolfLogix more closely matching

the GPS systems in the golf carts. I highly recommend it. I did not purchase the color screen and don't recommend it unless you really need it. It took about 15 minutes to download 20 of the courses I play. Did not find any missing courses. When I show up at a course, I just turn on my GolfLogix and within 10 minutes it has located the course and goes to the first hole. No scrolling necessary. Have used the same 4 AA batteries for the past 4 rounds and they are still not drained. You can also use rechargeble batteries. Nice feature.

The Golf Buddy is at best medicre. What is really terrible is the customer service. The Warranty doesnt get respected. There was a manufacturer defect with the LCD, but the warranty didnt cover the defect after only 2 weeks. I called Golf Buddy directly, and after speaking to many managers and even the Vice President. They started with an estimate of $75 - $100, and then went down to $50 and then finally $35. I will never buy another Golf Buddy, and highly recommend noone else buying thsi product. I have never experienced this sort of poor and unprofessional customer service/care before.

"Very happy I purchased GP Tour GPS" 2009-08-18
By Gary (Cincinnati, OH)
First of all, this is not an advertisement review. I've read some from other sites that sound like a sales guy, or the company it self, wrote it.

I purchased the Golf Buddy Tour GPS in April '09 and it's been great. Of all the features, what helps me the most is the front / back of the green measurements. It really increases my comfort level when picking my club, knowing I won't come up way short when the pins in the back or I won't air-mail the pin when it's up front. That only saves a few shots a round. The easy features I like is that you don't have to select the course either. When I get to the course, it figures out what course I'm at when in auto mode. I'm also not a big fan of subscription rates you get with other GPS's. Overall, it's a good chunk of money to put out but, in my opinion, well worth it. It's the same amount you would pay for a good driver, but with the GB Tour, you use it on ever hole.

 "Approach G5" 2009-11-21
By Christopher P. Perkins (Research Triangle Park, NC)
I bought this as an upgrade to the GolfLogix G8, which itself is a very decent piece of equipment. I have been very impressed with it, although a friend has an SG5 and that it outstanding as well. The only minor things I would like to see improved (someday) would be that you have to go through too many screens to get from scoring to the course view and back (why don't they have an icon to go back and forth directly?), and the scoring system that Garmin/GolfLogix has for smartphones is much better. The Approach allows you to keep scores for up to 4 people. The smartphone version allows you to keep stats (fairways hit, greens hit, putts, penalties, sand, etc.), and I would love to see this on the Approach.

All things considered, though, this is a really good golf GPS, and the ability to get measurements to and from any point on the course using the touchscreen is a massive assistance as you plan strategy on how to attack each hole.

"Best Golf all around GPS unit!" 2009-11-14
By T. H. Truong
I've owned the GolfBuddy Tour, Calloway uPro and now this one, G5 Approach.

GolfBuddy Tour is great that it's loaded with courses (20,000+), battery lasts a long time. But, no flyover type view. Just pin location.

Calloway uPro is great with flyovers...just it's going to cost you to buy those. Cons that I could not get over: battery only really lasts for one round (even at low backscreen settings). If you ever play two rounds in one day it won't last through the entire second round. And if you ever forget to charge it...well, you're out of luck. Another con is that you have to pick and pick and pick to add courses...and that is EXTREMELY cumbersome. You have to click on EACH course on their website to add it...plus, to connect to uPro site you can only have 50 courses or less loaded on it. Anything more on your uPro and you have to delete to get under 50 before you can sync with their website. Why is 50 not enough? Well, I travel quite a bit and I play a lot of different courses...plus, there are well over 100 courses around me, so, it was a pain for me to load and reload and change and reload...etc.

G5 approach - best overall. Has all of the courses. Has overview with hazards in view. drag and drop for where you want to go. 2 AA batteries last about three rounds. I use eneloop batteries so they keep their charge when not in use. I also keep a set of AA's in my bag just in case. So, AA batteries actually are easier cause you don't have to worry about plugging it into something mid-round to charge it up. Easy to use, accurate (made by GARMIN). I've never had a problem seeing the screen out on the course? So, i'm not sure what people are complaining about low light, etc...My buds have golf GPS' as well and we always just end up using my G5...most simple, quickest, has a great view of entire hole, can pin point where you want to get yardage, battery lasts, has every course. No more annual fees, easy. I would recommend this unit to ANYBODY.

Hit em long, hit em straight!!!

This unit is so easy to use. Really didn't need the instructions. One button to turn it on and a touch on the screen does the rest. I also like the fact that you are not required to pay an anual fee. GO GARMIN YOU ROCK !!! Takes the distance guessing out of the game. Only one draw back for now, is the limited amount of courses available

for my area.

By Gary L. Gross (Ohio)
This device is an excellent tool for all golfers. It is very easy to use and is very accurate. It possesses all of the features that other manufacturers possess and has a few that others do not. I wish it had a built in rechargeable battery versus having to purchase batteries and/or having to recharge batteries in a recharger. But, I have been getting 4 1/2 rounds out of the AA lithium batteries. I hope future enhancements can be upgradeable to my unit that includes a saving function for shot mades for future round comparisons. All in all the G5 works very well and I would highly recomment it to golfers of any handicap.

 "You will like it" 2009-11-12

By JollyGood (Neenah, WI.)

I have owned this product for approximately one year and I am very satisfied. This is actually my second one as the first one slipped off of my belt and it was run over by the golf cart behind me. This is a rugged unit and will take drops and a certain amount of abuse, but it won't handle being run over.

If you are looking for a unit that keeps track of your scores and other statistics, this is not for you. It will automatically find the course you are at and will tell you yardage to the hole. It will also measure that long drive that you hit with your driver. It is quite accurate and you will find that it is hard to play without it once you get used to it.

Golflogix does constant course updates and will notify you of this. I have never found a course that is not available on this unit. The $30.00 annual fee is also the least expensive of the various manufactures. There tech support is easy to work with as I did find an error on one course. I called them and a change was made in 48 hours.

I should mention that several of my golfing buddies after seeing my golflogix, have gone ahead and purchased one for themselves.

 "Fantastic Device!" 2009-10-29

By R. Pagni (Sparks, Nevada)

I spent considerable time reviewing all the available GPS units out on the market. Granted, the old saying that you get what you pay for, applies here also. The devices in the $4-500 dollar range were full of extras but I was looking for something that would fit my budget and suit my needs. Without question, the Golflogix does just that. One of the big factors in my decision to buy this unit was my far sightedness. I just didn't want to wear my glasses to read the numbers that were very small on a number of the other devices. Golflogix's big number display is perfect. No glasses needed as the numbers are large enough to read without problem. I have used it on about 8 courses so far and the yardage is right on compared to the courses that have cart GPS. It's simple and gives you the yardage to the hazards and to the green without doing anything, gives me more time to try to hit the ball straight! The only complaint I have so far is the belt clip broke after just two rounds. I ordered a couple of new ones so I will see how they work. The first of batteries lasted about 3 rounds but I recently purchased re-chargables so that won't be a problem. I would recommend the Golflogix to anyone who wants a simple, easy to use GPS that has a very affordable price.

"great product at an affordable price" 2009-10-22

By hairiam45 (Rhode Island)

I'm very happy so far with my new gps by Golflogixs. It's easy to use and was way more affordable than a skycaddie. Take's 2 AA batteries and you can golf several rounds before replacing them. Just keep a spare set in your bag and their easy to replace right on the course! It's not fancy like the skycaddie, but everyone I know that has the skycaddie doesn't even use all of its features because it's too complicated to learn how, especially during a round of golf when you want to keep play moving. My golflogixs is always within one to two yards of the skycaddie readings, too.

 "GolfLogix GPS" 2009-10-17

By J. T. Fischer (Springfield, IL)

The Golf Logix GPS is a great product to help lower your score by giving you accurate yardage from your last drive or fairway shot. Additionally, yardage to hazards and greens even if your one fairway away like my golf partner. It is more reasonably priced through AMAZON than other GPS systems available on the market. The great part is you can download 20 courses throughout the world not just the ten from other GPS companies that charge a yearly membership of $39.95. Golf Logix only charges the low yearly membership fee of $29.95.
